Description
This expressionist oil painting portrays a view from inside a window of the castle de San Cristobal in Puerto Rico. The viewer is presented with a stark contrast between the darkness that covers most of the painting and the light blue strokes that make up the ocean water in the distance. The bars on the window give the impression of being imprisoned, and the only escape is the beautiful view of the ocean. The painting was created during the lockdown in Los Angeles in 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak, which adds to the feeling of being trapped in the artwork. Despite this sense of confinement, the light and hope provided by the view of the ocean give the viewer a glimmer of optimism.
